Trinity Caps Off Undefeated Dual Season With 3A State Title

TRINITY, N.C. Competing at Wheatmore High School on Tuesday night, the Bulldogs captured the 3A State Dual Team Championship, defeating West Lincoln 42-33 to complete a perfect 33-0 season and secure their second state dual title in three seasons.

On the biggest stage of the dual year, Trinity delivered.

Stephen Cross opened the championship match at 120 pounds with a technical fall, immediately setting the tone. At 126, Edgar Vasquez followed with a fall a pivotal bonus-point win that helped build early separation. Omega Edge added another pin at 132 as momentum continued to swing Trinity’s way.

After dropping a hard-fought decision at 138, the Bulldogs responded with authority.

Hezekyah Matson secured a fall at 144. Simeon Hammett recorded a technical fall at 150. Addam Bernal added a fall at 157. Haris Idress delivered another technical fall at 165. The surge through the middle weights created the decisive margin.

Trinity later forfeited at 175, and at 190, Anees Khan earned an 11-8 decision victory. After Khan’s win, the dual was out of reach to lose. With the championship secured, the Bulldogs forfeited the remaining weights, bringing the final score to 42-33.

While the scoreboard narrowed late due to forfeits, the outcome had already been decided

After the match, head coach Brandon Coggins reflected on the performance.

“I felt top to bottom our guys wrestled really good over the past few weeks, and I think that showed tonight.”

With the Individual State Championships quickly approaching, Coggins emphasized that the team’s focus remains forward.

“It doesn’t stop here. We still have goals to achieve. I think we’re peaking at the right time, and that’s going to help send these guys toward the next goals they want to reach this season.”

For his performance throughout the championship run, Edgar Vasquez was named the State Championship MVP.
